Directed by the wonderfully wacky Naleli Mercy, with musical magic by maestro Lwazi Pinyana and fabulously funky moves from choreographer Katie Hilton-Barber, Girl in the Hood is no ordinary fairy tale; it’s a full-blown pantomime adventure!
Meet Red Riding Hood: fearless, fashionable, and sent on a Very Important Mission by Mother to deliver goodies to Nana in the woods. But she’s not going alone! Oh no! She’s teamed up with her bestie, Goldilocks, professional porridge thief and part-time outlaw (wanted for breaking, entering, and excessive snacking).
When they arrive at Nana’s cottage… disaster! Nana has been swallowed whole by the Big Bad Wolf! Red and Goldie are ready to perform emergency tummy surgery when……. plot twist! A forest ranger bursts in and informs them that Big Bad Wolves are officially endangered. No stabbing allowed.
So what do two determined heroines do? They pack their snacks, tighten their boots, and march off on an epic quest to find a witch with the right kind of magic to wiggle Nana out of Wolfie’s belly. Along the way, they bump into royalty, ruffians, sinister sorceresses and villains with serious attitude, including the Evil Queen and the Wicked Witch, who are VERY invested in making sure Red Riding Hood’s day gets worse.
Will friendship triumph over foul play? Will Nana ever get out of that wolf? And will Goldilocks stop stealing things that don’t belong to her?
There’s only one way to find out…
