About Us | Contact

Franklin Players is a community theatre group based in Roosevelt Park, Johannesburg. The society has been running for over sixty years and puts on at least three productions a year ā€“ from our annual festival of one-act plays to our mid-year comedy and big bang year-end musical, and sometimes even more shows in between.

We aim to get community members active in the arts and welcome anyone who wishes to join, regardless of experience. We are always on the lookout for new talent, not only on stage but backstage and front of house crew are equally as important to every production.Ā Of course we do this for the love of theatre and DO NOT GET PAID! It’s a passion, a creative outlet, and a home away from home where we have made many friends ā€“ it’s more like a Franklin family.

So just to be clear, we DO NOT PAY ACTORS OR CREW in any of our productions. In fact, all cast members need to be paid-up Franklin members in order to perform (fees are nominal, refer to our membership form further down this page).

Rehearsals take place at the Roosevelt Park Recreation Centre on Sunday afternoons, Monday evenings and Wednesday evenings ONLY once a production has been cast and rehearsals are in full swing. Once the curtain goes down on closing night, we do not meet again until auditions open for the following show.

With many productions, Franklin Players donates at least 10% of ticket sales to a selected charity. In the past we have donated toĀ FORA (Friends Of Rescued Animals), SPCA, Border Collie Rescue, Barking Mad / Dogtown SA, and most recently Baby Moses Child Sanctuary.

We email news once a month to our mailing list subscribers, so drop us a line if you would like to be added to ourĀ mailing list and keep abreast of upcoming auditions and productions.Ā

All actors cast in our shows automatically become members and pay membership for the year (R200 for adults, R100 for students and half price after July 1st). We welcome and encourage you to join for reduced ticket prices, free workshops and a wonderful community just as interested in the stage life as you.Ā

It’s easy to become a member ā€“ simply complete theĀ membership formĀ and email it to committee@franklin.org.za together with proof of payment. The fees are extremely nominal and basically help us pay the rent.

We invite you to contact us and join the Franklin family!

Franklin D. Roosevelt

BACKGROUND:

In 1962, Harry Falkov and Iris Schuck established the drama group “Franklin Players” at the Roosevelt Park Recreation Centre (both named after the famous American President, Franklin D. Roosevelt).

From their early years, the Franklin Players have continually grown in strength and are constantly striving to improve the standard of their presentations.

As I’m sure you can see, we certainly have a little niche carved out just for you. So, if you live in our vicinity, why not come along and join in the fun? If you don’t live in our vicinity, well then the answer is obvious ā€“ relocate!

Franklin Players is also a founder member of SANCTAĀ (The South African National Community Theatre Association).

    • Hi there,

Are you interested in singing or helping backstage? In which case, please attend the auditions on 10 June at 2 pm at the Roosevelt park rec centre hall in Linden, JHB.

  1. Hi, I am a first year student at university and I have always done drama throughout my schooling career. I am currently feeling withdrawal symptoms from being away from the stage for so long. I would like to join this group just to satisfy my longing to be on stage though i can not promise any strong commitments to any of the projects due to me having to focus on my degree programme as well. Is it possible for me to still join this group and if so, how do I go about doing that?

  2. Hi. I would like to get involved, particularly in acting. Please advise how I can get involved. Thank you, Sarah

    • Hello Sarah – i can’t tell you how sorry i am for this tardy reply! i would suggest you show up for the next round of auditions (probably early 2014 – our next Franklin and Friends One Act Play Festival) – that way you can chat to everyone and get involved in the next production…

    • Hi Londeka, it’s wonderful that you would like to join our group! Why don’t you come along for auditions later this month for the one-act play festival? Every year Franklin Players and other amateur drama societies such as our good friends at EADS put on a festival of about 10 very short plays (only one act each, about half an hour) and it’s the most fun you’re ever going to have!! Check out our Auditions page for the details – this year we have four audition sessions on two Sunday afternoons and two Monday evenings. You do not need to prepare anything, just come along and join in the fun! We look forward to meeting you soon šŸ™‚
      Cheers,
      Traci
