June News

Congrats!

Congratulations to the winner of our ‘pulled and composite wardrobe’ category, Katelyn Denoon. Katelyn’s entry was both innovative and fun, having produced a mini video of her favourite cartoon character from ‘Star vs The Forces of Evil’ – have a look at the video on Instagram. Katelyn is now the recipient of 4 tickets to The Franklin Players’ next showcase.

Our awesome second and third placements are:

  • Alicia Pan (Money Heist)
  • Amy Skinner (Dungeons and Dragons)

Advanced Level 3 Lockdown

With the President’s latest address to the nation, broadcast on Wednesday 17 June 2020, we are now officially in ‘Advanced Lockdown Level 3’. This means that cinemas and theatres are now open, but need to be ‘aligned to limitations on the gathering of people’. Officially this means that we are awaiting the new regulations and protocols that will go with this new state of affairs.

Currently, until the new regulations are revealed and officiated, Level 3 Lockdown regulations are still in place. Briefly this means:

  • Travel to the recreation centre is still illegal for most of us. According to the regulations complete freedom of movement is still not possible. Essential trips to the store, medical reasons, and travel to work and school are the only driving you’re permitted to do. Other than that, you’re only allowed to drive within a five kilometre radius from your home.
  • Rules and regulations regarding masks while acting / dancing on stage. Audience members should be alright with keeping masks on but how does one convey the necessary emotion on stage, even just during a rehearsal? Currently a person must when in a public place, wear a cloth face mask or a homemade item that covers the nose and mouth, or another appropriate item to cover the nose. Also no person is allowed access to any public place without a mask.

For the current rules and regulations: Disaster management Act: Regulations:Alert 3 during Coronavirus COVID-19 lockdown (issued by the South African Government –
www.gov.za/documents/disaster-management-act-regulations-alert-level-3-during-coronavirus-covid-19-lockdown-28). Remember these regulations are now subject to change soonest!

What is the way forward for Franklin?

While here at Franklin the news of relaxing regulations has been music to our ears, we do have a few considerations to keep in mind and steps to follow before we are back on track:

  • We await the newly revised regulations under the Disaster Management Act: Regulations: Alert 3 from Government in order to move forward.
  • Franklin will need to carefully look into understanding what ‘the limitations on the gathering of people’ entails under the new regulations.
  • Roosevelt Park Recreation Centre has yet to officially open.
  • When the centre does open, Franklin will have to set out a disaster management plan of their own in alignment with the Roosevelt Park Recreation Centre’s regulations and disaster management plan which is informed by the City of Johannesburg, municipality and other government institutions. While we still await the Recreation Centre’s plans we do envision they will be requiring a plan that will include procedures regarding:
    • hygiene,
    • number of people allowed to gather,
    • actual crowd management (entrances, exits, social distancing),
    • staff regulations (hygiene, social distancing and infection procedures),
    • backstage social distancing and hygiene,
    • as well the actual procedures to follow should infections occur.
  • Before we can continue with our activities, the Joint Organisational Committee (JOC) at the City of Johannesburg will be requiring a new application for all our events. This will also include a presentation by the Franklin Chairperson in front of a panel consisting of various government representatives from different departments  No deadlines have been issued yet by the council regarding this.

In lieu of all these regulations and steps to be taken we urge you to remain patient with us. It is up to each of us to do our civic duty and as such we ask you to please remain safe and healthy by acting responsibly. The ‘Advanced level 3’ is not a level 2 lockdown. We will do our best to work through the items on the agenda as quickly as possible and will keep you informed on our subsequent progress.

While at home under national lockdown, catch up on some great martial arts and action movies (focusing on fight choreography).

Trying to make recommendations for movies is sometimes a difficult thing to do, especially when you start looking into the technology (CGI) that is available today versus the older movies which had no technology to enhance shots and effects. There is a current debate about CGI versus practical effect, with practical effects having an edge over CGI because they are an existent entity. Is it more difficult to execute a fight in real life with the risk of injury? Or do actors need to be more versatile today in front of a green screen where all they act against is themselves? Then there is the question of cost. With CGI, you don’t have to worry about everything going correctly on the day. You can always change it later, but at a cost. Whatever your preference or opinion, we think it is important, when watching a movie, to consider the era in which the movie was made and ask yourself what influenced the actors in their performance at the time it was made. Have acting techniques changed over time? Only one way to form an opinion and that is to watch…

We hope you enjoy this months’ recommendations!

PLEASE NOTE:  Some of the above and below recommendations carry age restrictions and need parental guidance. We want to PREVENT causing any unnecessary issues for you at home while most of you are home-schooling your children during this national lockdown period.
